Can the American empire be seen as getting stronger or crumbling apart?
I need a little help on this. this is an essay topic that i have to do and i need three solid points to help me solidify my argument. I have two; one is that i can talk about the economy deteriorating, their military deteriorating as in defense and foreign alliances, but i cant think of a third one, could somebody please help me. 10 points for best answer
First of all, I think you need to drop the term 'American Empire' as this doesn't really mean anything in particular. It might be mistaken for the collection of dependent territories, like Guam, US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.
I think you're trying to combine two factors; military might and economic clout.
The USA is declining *relatively* as an economic power, but that's due to the rest of the world becoming richer, not any US decline. Certainly right now we're in an ongoing recession, but that's affecting the whole world and will only last a few years until growth resumes. Then, the USA will continue to get richer too, along with everywhere else. The global economy is much more interlocked than ever before. It's in everyone's interest that it thrives, so using economy as a form of unfriendly 'persuasion' doesn't really work any more, unless it's done with international cooperation. Hence you might argue that the USA is losing its ability to use its economy as a bargaining point.
Militarily the USA has been the world's only superpower since the end of the USSR. There's no other nation that comes close, and it's unlikely that this will change over the coming century. Certainly there are other countries with large armies, such as Russia and China, but the quality is substantially less. There are other, sometimes higher quality armies, but these are much smaller.
Perhaps one area that has declined is that of moral authority. This has been the case since the 1960s. After a period of mostly backing democracy and freedom, the USA was later seen to be the bad guy, backing despotic regimes just because they were anti-communist. Support for South Vietnam didn't help, and the blinkered obsession with 'anti-communism' replaced the earlier concern for freedom and good government. Of course the USSR played the same game, backing very dodgy regimes and militias, and their reputation went the same way.
There is a strong worldwide perception that the USA backs Israel almost without reservation, no matter how Israel behaves. The plight of millions of refugees, dispossessed since 1948, is submerged under reasoning of 'fighting terror' or 'backing democracy'. The extremist activities of many Palestinian activists has not helped, but the underlying problem of a large displaced population attracts sympathy from around the world and criticism of those who back their dispossessors. There is a frequent perception of the USA using double standards in this.
Of course, this could all change if a Middle East peace settlement came about. It came close in the 90s, but subsequent indifference by the country with real clout let the situation get worse. However, to date, this has resulted in the USA's reputation being besmirched.
Anyway, I suspect that reputation might be the main sector where the USA could be seen to be failing, though this is in no way destined to be terminal. If good decisions are made, the country's best years can still be ahead of it.
